I opened Birdhouse just about four years ago. I’ve loved designing projects and working with local artists for these past few years. But working for yourself in a creative way can feel overwhelming and sometimes isolating. To me, it’s so much more fun to bounce ideas off of other people and I always feel like being a part of a team is better than hustling by yourself.
At the end of last year, I was fortunate to start collaborating with my friend, Amanda, on projects outside of Omaha. She’s helped with project management and new business which has been really wonderful. However, she doesn’t live in my city and we mostly communicate via phone, text, and email. It’s been a really positive experience, but not the day-to-day, partner-in-crime fix I was craving.
In the last few months my life and business has a changed a great deal–some good and some bad. It’s all led me to venturing in new directions and I’ve chalked most of it up to learning experiences. Along the way, a very talented and organized (exactly what I needed!) woman happened to stop working at her job in commercial interior design.
I started leaving little hints with her. “Oh hey, lady. I hope your day is going well. Now, come work with me.” Ok, maybe not that subtle. Those amazing powers of persuasion did finally convince her that she could brave it with me out in the small business world. What a coincidence that Ginger McCandless was already contributing her awesome style in all of her fashion posts here.
Now she will also be a design consultant for Birdhouse!
We will be introducing a new series of local design packages that are not full-service, but cater to clients that have a more modest budget. Previously it was hard for me to take on the additional workload as I needed to focus on my larger projects. This meant that every month I was turning down people who wanted some help with their space. Now we can try to really make some of our services accessible and stand by the brand focus.
And one last perk about working together is getting to take new profile pictures with our friends and talented photographers, Hooton Images.
Thanks to everyone for the support all this time!
